  1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?

This account? About a few months shy of two years, though I didn't start posting until this Summer. My first account was made in '05 though.

  2. What does your username mean?

It is my Asian name going through several language changes so the end result is mildly pun-ny. It can mean several things but I wanted it to sound like "Secret Pen Technique!" like an attack right out of a shōnen anime. Yes, I am a dork.

  3. Describe yourself in three words.

    Contradiction, Byronic, Laid-back.

  4. Are you left or right handed?

    Left.

  5. What was your first deviation?

I deactivated that account but I think it was poetry. Bad poetry.

  6. What is your favourite type of art to create?

It'll probably be easier to list what I hate; my favorite type of art is something that just flows onto the canvas like it is eager to be put in visuals and isn't fighting me the whole way. (Sequential Art.)

  7. If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

Um. Would 3D modeling even count? ;3

Truthfully, I am still learning and constantly revamping my current style/approach and am enjoying the journey. If I had to "master" anything, it'd honestly be something unrelated to drawing -- maybe a musical instrument.

  8. What was your first favourite?

    Don't remember (again, deactivated account).

  9. What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

Things that I look at and takes my breath away. (Digital, if you want a straight answer.)

  10. Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

A single deviant? Well, yuumei, I guess, and I bet thousands of others said the same thing. She's just become almost iconic to dA for me. :shrugs:

  11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

Anyone is cool as long as they aren't close-minded or have a bad personality.

  12. How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

Well, when I was still a teen, I had this interaction that basically had me learn to be careful with "friends" online. Otherwise, a lot of people on this site makes me want to improve myself and be a better artist.

  13. What are your preferred tools to create art?

Computer. Tablet. A decent art program.

  14. What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

I end up coming up with ideas when I am doing something unrelated to art. Read: chores or right before sleep.

  15. What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

When my first account got 1k page-views on the profile page, I guess? Recently, I suppose when I got over five favorites for

. Or when one of my deviations got included in a collection for Marriage Equality.

I haven't made a journal in forever so... might as well. :)

We're at that transitional period again where the previous season's anime are concluding and this season's titles haven't really started rolling in just yet. Of particular note for Summer 2014 is the remake of Bishouji Senshi Sailor Moon while several second seasons of certain titles were also aired. A few anime in the sports genre that started in the Spring season ended in Summer along with the HunterxHunter(2011) series having wrapped up -- quite possibly indefinitely since the animation has caught up with the manga's latest finished Arc. At the least, it'll be awhile with Togashi-sensei taking a hiatus from the manga with no definite return date mentioned.

For Summer 2014, I actually did something different in the fact I watched some first episodes and decided to Marathon It once it's concluded. Sometimes, I let an anime accumulate several episodes before catching up -- most of the time unintentionally, but every so often on purpose -- but it was the first time I decided to just push it off to the end. It was mostly since this season had the most titles I wanted to watch once the First Episode Run finished up its rounds for me. I still ended up letting episodes accumulate, dropped several series, and decided to put some titles on the casual watching list (watching it sometime in the future, eventually).

Now that I've pretty much wrapped up everything I followed, I suppose I'll drop some series' names that stuck out for me. First, is the single anime I managed to faithfully watch week-to-week: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Then, I have to mention HunterxHunter again, with a conclusion that echoed the ending of the Arc in the manga that in turn left it satisfyingly "Done!" for some or delightfully open-ended for others, depending on their mood, but an ending nonetheless. Tokyo ESP deserves a mention for fine-tuning the little details in the original manga (some of which were hilarious cameos that copyright probably wouldn't have let them get away with) and creating a well-rounded story. I didn't watch Aldnoah Zero, personally, considering I'm not a big fan of mecha anime, but the eye-candy I glimpsed when my roommate watched it was beautiful enough I've actually put it on my To Watch Eventually list. Re:Hamatora was a title I consciously waited for it to conclude before watching it (and I am SO glad I did so) that I also have to mention, for the art and for that lightbulb moment I had in the last episode -- I rarely read/watch a story without inevitably figuring out what will probably happen, so any pleasantly surprising moments are rather precious to me.

The stand out for me this season, though, and probably not as well-known as some of the more popular titles, is Terror In Resonance. The character designs are superb -- I have no idea why I stared at Nine for so long when he is a somewhat generic anime male with dark hair and glasses but I did Every. Single. Episode. The music was awesome but what else can you expect with Yoko Kanno behind the helm? The backgrounds are also very well done -- I'm kind of upset Hulu didn't have HD quality for my eyes to properly feast -- and crowds are in a traditional style instead of the 3D I've been seeing lately, so there's no visual dissonance. The plot is probably where people might look away from my single recommendation, since the genre is not everyone's cup of tea. It is clever, though, and while some might guess certain things (even the characters in the story notice), I doubt anyone would figure out EVERYTHING. Like Re:Hamatora, the last episode was masterful; I actually cried a little and the last time I cried was at the conclusion of the Chimera Ant arc for HunterxHunter (and I was ready for it, having read the manga and cried before at the exact same scene!) which will probably make history as one of those defining moments in animanga. The directing was beautiful in execution but it's not surprising if you look at Shinichiro Watanabe's other directorial works -- of which includes Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, to name a few. So, yup, Terror In Resonance is my single Must Recommend title for Summer 2014.

On to Fall 2014! Not going to say much, since I haven't seen anything yet, other than the fact there doesn't seem to be a Reverse Harem anime for the girls this season (with a plethora of Shoujo titles to counter that fact) and Studio Ghibli has a series coming out this season. The only anime I'm anticipating is Log Horizon 2nd Series.

So, a new season of anime will begin in 3 days (barring that single title which already has the first episode out) and it'll also be October. Everyone ready for the Halloween antics to begin? Coincidentally, Halloween 2014 will be the date of exactly one year since I've opened this account.

Trick or Treat, yeah? :3

a.k.a an FAQ:

Why "PenOugi" and what does it mean?
Pen Ougi is actually my Asian name having gone through several different pronunciations in other languages, finished with terms that rhyme with my name. The "Pen" part just means the writing instrument. "Ougi" has several different translations from a「扇」folding fan,「黄耆」the roots of certain kinds of herbs,「横議」arguing persistently, or「奥義」secret/mystery. Foremost, it's a namesurname firstbut Japanese video game and/or shounen comic enthusiasts can probably translate the "Ougi" as 'secret technique.'

What's MangaStudio?
A graphics editing program, its Japanese name is ComicStudio (or Clip Studio Paint) and it creates crisp line-art akin to SAI. MangaStudio also has the added benefit of streamlining comic creation with the ability of organizing and drawing pages by chapter/volume batches.

Why not use SAI, which is pretty popular for digital artists here in dA, second only to Photoshop?
Simply, I have used MangaStudio longer at first, and then I recently switched to a Mac OS which SAI is not compatible with. I'm not endorsing choosing one over the other, though I can say that MangaStudio/ComicStudio might be better for artists that create comics or graphic novels for print (or in pages, versus strip formats) while SAI is good for illustrators who don't need the extras of the former.

...more will be added as needed.
